The UK dependant visa rules 2026 have changed significantly over the past two years. Therefore, if you plan to bring your spouse, partner, or children to the UK, you must understand the current rules before you apply. Recent updates have tightened eligibility for care workers, medium-skilled workers, and students. However, skilled workers in qualifying roles can still bring their family members to the UK.
This guide covers everything you need to know, including who qualifies, what documents you need, how much it costs, and how long it takes.
What is a UK dependant visa?
A UK dependant visa allows the close family members of a main visa holder to live, work, and study in the UK. Dependants can join you while you are on a qualifying work, study, or business visa. The visa links directly to the main applicant’s leave. This means the dependant can only stay in the UK for as long as the main visa remains valid.
Currently, eligible dependants under most routes include spouses, civil partners, unmarried partners, and children under the age of 18. Extended family members such as parents, siblings, and grandparents do not qualify as dependants under work or study routes. They must apply through separate family visa routes instead.
Who counts as a dependant under UK immigration rules?
Before applying, you need to confirm that your family member qualifies as a dependant. The Home Office recognises the following categories.
A spouse or civil partner qualifies if the relationship is legally recognised and genuine. An unmarried partner qualifies if the couple has been in a relationship for at least two years. A child under 18 qualifies if both parents are coming to the UK, or if one parent is already settled here. Children aged 16 or over must show they are not leading an independent life, for example by being in full-time education.
Importantly, parents, siblings, and other extended relatives do not qualify as dependants under most work or study routes.
UK dependant visa rules 2026: which visa routes allow dependants?
Not every visa holder can bring family members to the UK. Therefore, the first thing you must check is whether your specific visa route permits dependants. Below is a breakdown of the main routes.
Skilled Worker visa dependants
Skilled Worker visa holders can still bring dependants in 2026. However, a key change took effect on 22 July 2025. Workers in roles at RQF Level 3 to 5 (medium-skilled jobs) who were sponsored after that date can no longer bring dependants. Only Skilled Workers in roles at RQF Level 6 or above retain the right to sponsor family members.
Consequently, if your role is below degree level and you received your sponsorship after 22 July 2025, your family members cannot apply as dependants. If your sponsorship started before that date, you keep your existing rights under transitional protections.
Care worker and health and care visa dependants
The care worker dependant ban remains firmly in place in 2026. If you are a care worker or senior care worker and you did not hold your visa before 11 March 2024, you cannot bring dependants to the UK. This rule applies regardless of your employer or the region you work in.
However, if you held a Health and Care Worker visa before 11 March 2024, you retain your right to bring family members under transitional protections. Additionally, exceptions exist for UK-born children and sole parents in specific circumstances.
Student visa dependants
Student visa holders face strict restrictions. From January 2024, only students on postgraduate research programmes such as PhDs, MPhils, and research-based master’s degrees can bring dependants. Furthermore, the course must last at least nine months, or six months for government-sponsored students.
Therefore, undergraduate students and taught postgraduate students cannot bring family members to the UK under current rules. If you fall into these categories, you will need to explore alternative routes.
Other qualifying visa routes
Several other visa routes still permit dependants in 2026. These include the Global Talent visa, the Scale-up Worker visa, the Senior or Specialist Worker visa under Global Business Mobility, the Innovator Founder visa, and the Minister of Religion visa (Tier 2). If you hold one of these visas, you can generally bring your spouse and children with you.
UK dependant visa requirements 2026
Once you confirm your visa route qualifies, your dependant must meet the following requirements.
Relationship evidence
The Home Office requires proof that the relationship is genuine and subsisting. For spouses and civil partners, you must provide a valid marriage or civil partnership certificate. For unmarried partners, the rules in 2026 no longer strictly require two years of cohabitation (living together). Instead, you must prove a “durable relationship” of at least two years. While joint bank statements and tenancy agreements remain the strongest evidence, couples who have lived apart for work or cultural reasons can now qualify by providing proof of regular communication, frequent visits, and shared financial support over a two-year period.
Financial requirement
The financial rules for dependant visas differ from the partner visa route. Under most work visa routes, the main applicant must show they can support the dependant without relying on public funds. If the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer confirms financial responsibility, you may not need separate bank statements. Otherwise, you must show funds held for at least 28 consecutive days in your bank account.
For family visas under Appendix FM, the UK visa financial requirement of Β£29,000 per year applies to the sponsor. This threshold covers spouse and partner dependants on the family visa route.
Accommodation requirement
You must prove that adequate accommodation exists in the UK. The property must not be overcrowded under UK housing standards. Evidence such as a tenancy agreement, mortgage statement, or letter from a property owner will satisfy this requirement.
UK dependant visa documents required
Preparing a complete and accurate document pack is essential. Missing documents are one of the most common reasons for refusal. You should include the following.
First, provide a valid passport for the dependant and any previous passports. Second, include a copy of the main applicant’s current visa and passport. Third, submit relationship evidence such as a marriage certificate, civil partnership certificate, or cohabitation evidence for unmarried partners. Fourth, provide birth certificates for child dependants. Fifth, include financial evidence such as bank statements covering at least the last three months, and payslips where relevant. Sixth, provide proof of accommodation in the UK. Finally, include two passport-sized colour photographs and biometric information submitted at a visa application centre.
UK dependant visa fee 2026
The UK dependant visa fee 2026 depends on the main visa route and whether you apply from inside or outside the UK.
For applications made outside the UK, the standard fee is Β£2,064 per dependant. For applications made inside the UK, the fee is Β£1,407. In addition to the application fee, every dependant must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of Β£1,035 per year. This covers NHS access for the full duration of the visa.
Priority services are also available. The super priority service costs an additional Β£1,000 and aims to deliver a decision within 24 hours. The priority service costs Β£500 and targets a decision within 5 working days.
UK dependant visa processing time 2026
Standard processing times vary depending on where you apply from. Applications made from outside the UK take up to 3 weeks. Applications made from inside the UK take up to 8 weeks. During peak seasons, processing times can extend further.
After approval, dependants receive an eVisa through their UKVI online account. Physical Biometric Residence Permits have been phased out as part of the UK eVisa dependant route transition. Your immigration status is now held digitally and can be accessed and shared online.
UK dependent visa application process
Follow these steps to complete your application successfully.
First, confirm that your visa route allows dependants and that your family member qualifies. Second, gather all required documents before starting the application. Third, create or log in to your UKVI online account and complete the application form. Fourth, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Fifth, book and attend a biometric appointment at your nearest visa application centre. Finally, wait for the Home Office to issue a decision.
Each dependant must submit a separate application. However, you can link all applications to the main applicant using a unique reference number so they are processed together.
Common reasons for UK dependant visa refusals
Even strong applications can fail if they are not prepared carefully. Therefore, avoid these common mistakes.
Many applicants provide insufficient relationship evidence. Others submit bank statements that do not cover the full 28 consecutive days required. Some applicants use inconsistent information across documents. Others fail to disclose previous immigration applications or refusals. Additionally, submitting documents in a foreign language without a certified translation is a frequent cause of delays and refusals.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Skilled Worker bring their family to the UK in 2026?

Generally no. The care worker dependant ban has been in place since 11 March 2024. However, if you held a Health and Care Worker visa before that date, you may still be able to bring family members under transitional rules.
Can a student bring their spouse to the UK in 2026?
Only if you are studying on a postgraduate research programme such as a PhD or MPhil that lasts at least nine months. Undergraduate and taught postgraduate students cannot bring dependants.
How much does a UK dependant visa cost in 2026?
The application fee is Β£2,064 from outside the UK and Β£1,407 from inside. You must also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of Β£1,035 per year per dependant.

Yes. Most dependants have full permission to work in the UK without any restrictions. However, they cannot access most public funds.
How long does a UK dependant visa take to process?
Standard processing takes up to 3 weeks from outside the UK and up to 8 weeks from inside the UK. Priority and super priority services are available for faster decisions.
What happens to existing dependants if the care worker ban applies to me?
If your dependants applied before 11 March 2024, they are protected under transitional rules. They can remain in the UK and extend their dependant visas even if you are now subject to the ban.
Can I apply for my dependants at the same time as my own visa?
Yes. You can submit dependant applications at the same time as your own. Link each application to yours using the relevant reference number so the Home Office processes them together.
