Government Launches New Immigration and Asylum Bill in Kingโ€™s Speech

The government has announced plans to introduce a new Immigration and Asylum Bill, with the proposal forming part of the legislative programme set out in today’s King’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament. The government stated that the bill is intended to deliver an immigration system that is both firm and fair, with the aim of restoring control and rebuilding public confidence in how immigration is managed.

According to background briefing notes published alongside the Speech, the proposed legislation will build on measures already introduced since 2024 and will put into law a series of reforms first outlined in the government’s Restoring Order and Control statement from November 2025.

The bill is expected to be wide-ranging in scope. Key elements include significant reforms to the asylum system, the establishment of a new independent appeals body that would replace the existing First-tier Tribunal, and changes to how Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights is applied in immigration cases. Article 8, which protects the right to family and private life, has frequently been cited in legal challenges to deportation and removal decisions, and the government appears intent on narrowing the circumstances in which it can be used to resist such action.

Further details of the bill are expected to emerge as it progresses through parliament, and the proposals are likely to face scrutiny from legal professionals, refugee organisations and human rights advocates.
