Three countries agree to take back illegal migrants after UK visa warning

Following a strong warning from the Home Secretary about potential visa penalties, Namibia and Angola have agreed to cooperate on returning their nationals. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has also now committed to cooperation, just weeks after the Home Secretary revoked preferential visa treatment for VIPs and fast-track visa services for all nationals.

Within three months, agreements have been secured, and flights are already underway, demonstrating the impact of the Home Secretary’s approach. These developments mark a significant milestone in delivering reforms announced in November, aimed at restoring order and control to the UK immigration system.

While Angola, Namibia, and the DRC are cooperating on returns, some other countries continue to frustrate the process by refusing to take back nationals who have no right to remain in the UK. The Home Secretary has warned that countries unwilling to cooperate cannot expect normal visa relations, and further measures are expected for non-compliant states.

This strategy aligns with the Prime Minister’s directive for departments to use every tool available to regain control over the immigration system, adopting a more transactional approach with foreign governments based on their willingness to facilitate returns.

Removals of illegal migrants are at record levels, with 58,500 people removed or deported since the current government took office. Cooperation from Angola, Namibia, and the DRC could see over 3,000 nationals returned under the new agreements.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood MP stated:

“My message is clear: if foreign governments refuse to accept the return of their citizens, they will face consequences. Illegal migrants and dangerous criminals will now be removed and deported back to Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. I will do what it takes to restore order and control to our borders.”
