Ukrainians given more time to renew UK visas as Home Office extends Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme

The Home Office has announced that Ukrainians currently in the UK will now have substantially more time to apply for an extension under the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme. The application window has been extended from 28 days to 90 days before an individual’s current permission expires, offering greater flexibility and reassurance for those seeking to maintain lawful status.

In addition, the Government confirmed that the scheme itself will be extended by another 24 months. This allows eligible Ukrainians and their family members to remain in the UK for up to three and a half years under the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme, on top of the time already granted under previous Ukraine visa routes.

The Home Office emphasized that the extension will remain free of charge. Those granted further permission will continue to enjoy the right to work, as well as access to benefits, healthcare, and education. However, applicants must submit their applications before their current permission expires to avoid losing their legal status and associated rights. Updated guidance on applying to the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme is available on the official Home Office website.

In a written statement to Parliament, Mike Tapp, the Minister for Migration and Citizenship, noted that the changes respond to concerns raised by Ukrainian nationals regarding the previous short application window, as well as the need for longer-term certainty in the UK.

The Government also stated it will collaborate with Ukrainian community organisations and other stakeholders to ensure eligible individuals are aware of the changes and can apply in time to secure their continued lawful stay.

Lawsentis note: For Ukrainians in the UK, it is crucial to act promptly and seek expert advice to navigate these updated rules safely. LawSentis, an IAA-regulated UK immigration firm, can assist with timely applications under the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme, ensuring applicants maintain their rights to work, access services, and avoid any risk of overstaying.
